David Beckham to Play For Wellington Phoenix

Sources are reporting that former England and Manchester United star, David Beckham is set to play for the Wellington Phoenix next season.

Beckham who is currently on a one-year contract with Los Angeles Galaxy is set to join the Phoenix at the end of the 2012 MLS season. David Beckham will pay NZ$1.5 million per game to play with the Wellington Phoenix.

It is a win-win situation for both Beckham and the Welnix consortium with Beckham still harbouring hopes of making the 2014 England World Cup squad and the Welnix consortium looking to strengthen the finances of the Phoenix as well as fill the hole left by the retiring midfielder, Tim Brown.

While this move will be beneficial financially and also commercially in the short term for the Phoenix, the Welnix consortium believes the publicity from getting such a high profile footballer to join the club would sent a signal to the rest of the A-League and football world that the Phoenix are a force to be reckoned with and that Wellington is an attractive place to play football.

Beckham of course has been to Wellington to play football having featured for the Los Angeles Galaxy against the Wellington Phoenix in a friendly win 5 years ago.

James Cameron; good friend of Becks
Meanwhile, David Beckham's PA declined to comment on the story stating that a statement will be put out shortly. However, Beckham recently made this comment on twitter.

"@JamesCameron was at @WgtnPhoenixFC game tonight. Been telling me to get my arse down to NZ."

James Cameron, director of the highly successful Avatar and Titanic films, is good friends with the former England captain and it is thought that the Beckhams will stay with Cameron on his farm in the Wairarapa when Beckham arrives in New Zealand to play for the Phoenix.

It has also been reported that prominent New Zealand designer, Trelise Cooper is in talks with Victoria Beckham on a modelling contract while the former Spice Girl is in Wellington.

Meanwhile, the Wellington Phoenix are looking to sign All Whites captain, Ryan Nelsen, once the defender comes off his current contract with Tottenham Hotspur. Mario Balotelli has also been mentioned as a potential loan signing after the controversial Italian striker lashed out at manager, Roberto Mancini following Man City's draw with Sunderland on Saturday.

  1. His contract is 2 years thru 2013 and not going to Wellington anytime. Then he is to retire. Nice try!
